Track and Field: From Olympia, Greece to Minnetonka, Minnesota

Track and field is the second most popular sport in the entire world. Track was first recorded in the Ancient Olympic Games in Olympia, Greece during the year 776 BC. The original games have developed into a new form that still includes elements of the original games. The Olympic Games included wrestling, boxing, pankration (a martial art combining wrestling and boxing), and equestrian events (horse and chariot races), all of which are not included in the current array of track and field events.

Lacrosse began as an entirely male sport that was played by Native Americans in the early 1600’s. It was known as stickball and spread from the Algonquian tribe to the eastern half of the United States and western Great Lakes. It slowly began to develop around North America and now is played as a common recreational sport for both men and women.

However, from December to March, there is a group of people who are resilient enough to attend biweekly winter running club meetings despite the cold Minnesota temperatures. For many practices, the winter running club merges with the track captains’ practices for a long distance option.

Gymnastics is a sport that goes well beyond flips and pretty dance moves. While it may seem not all that challenging, it requires a feat of strength and carefully placed movements. Its history traces all the way back to Ancient Greek history. The famous Spartan warriors performed calisthenic regimens for cross-training purposes to make themselves as strong as humanly possible. These moves then carried over into modern day gymnastics.
