Sibling Rivalry: High School 2k16 Edition

Starting high school can be kind of scary, to say the least, especially at a place as big as Minnetonka. It can be hard to know exactly who to look up to. Naturally, as freshmen, we all looked up to the senior class because, well, they were older, less awkward, and much louder at Pep Fest. As a freshman, I totally took advantage of the fact that my older brother was a senior; he was practically my role model all of freshman year. When I was a freshman, there was an article similar to this one that was published in Breezes. My brother and I were even interviewed. So, naturally, I thought it would be interesting to interview some current senior and freshmen siblings to look at how they handle things.

Jake and Emma Siefker:

If you could only tell your sister one thing about high school, what would it be?

Jake ’17: “Be friends with everyone, say hi to everybody! Make as many connections as you can in your four years.”

How do you react when you see each other at school?

Jake ’17: “I try to embarrass her, but a good kind of embarrassment. You know?”

What changes do you want to see in yourself by the time you’re your brother’s age?

Emma ’20: “Changes I want to see in myself by the time I am my brother’s age are being more social with other people, always giving 100% no matter what, and lastly, getting involved in more school activities.”

What was your most awkward experience as a freshman?

Jake ’17: Well, I wore a blue beanie almost every day. I do not look good in beanies. Lesson learned.

Phoebe and Rocky Limond:

What are you looking forward to in high school that your sister has told you about?

Rocky ’20: “Leaving high school…”

How do you react when you see each other at school?

Phoebe ’17: “Rocky hides from me and gives me shady looks.”

Rocky ’20: “I pretend I don’t see Phoebe because she embarrasses me.”

What was your most awkward experience as a freshman?

Phoebe ’17: “I was in the senior section at the football game because my senior friends wanted me to hang out with them. All the other seniors did not and kicked me out ASAP.”

Chris and Ben Chayet:

What are you looking forward to in high school that your brother has told you about?

Ben ’20: “VANTAGE looks super interesting because of all the different courses offered. I also think it’ll be a good way for me to learn what I’d like to study in college.”

If you could only tell your brother one thing about high school, what would it be?

Chris ’17: “Make sure you use all of the resources available to you. The Writing Center is a great place to go with any type of paper you might have. The counselors are also extremely insightful and will do whatever they can to make sure you’re on the right path to graduation.”

What changes do you want to see in yourself by the time you’re your brother’s age?

Ben ’20: “I’d like to show a little more maturity and also not be as shy when meeting new people. As a freshman I meet new people all the time and I’m working on starting conversations with people I haven’t met before so I can get to know as many people as I can.”
