Tossed

While watching sports we see some bizarre stuff happen. It can be something little like a crazy trick play in football, to some big like a parachuter landing into the middle of a boxing match. Something a little milder then that is the act of throwing something out onto the playing field. In most sports it is something that is quite uncommon. In hockey however, this is quite a common occurrence. With it being the start of the hockey season here are just a few bizarre things that have been thrown onto the ice.

  1. The Detroit Red Wings and Octopuses

During a playoff game in 1952 the owners of the Detroits Eastern Market hurled an Octopus into the arena. After this event the team went on to win the championship. Ever since then, during a home playoff game, you might see some octopuses thrown out onto the ice.

2. The Rat Trick

In the dressing room Florida Panthers right winger Scott Mellanby spotted a rat scurrying across the floor. Seemingly upon instinct Mellanby wound up and took a slap shot that killed the rat. That night, October 8, 1995, Mellanby went out and scored 2 goals helping the Panthers win 4-3. During a post game interview Florida goalie John Vanbiesbrouk called this feat the “rat trick”. During one of the next home games a fan threw a plastic rat out onto the ice. After this, win after win we saw plastic rats fly onto the ice.

3. The Hamburglar

Just last year the Ottawa Senators made an incredible playoff push with the help of goalie Andrew Hammond. Hammond finished the season 20-1-2 and because of the way he robs opponents of goals, he was nicknamed “The Hamburglar”. So it seemed fit that burgers were to be thrown out onto the ice, and so the fans did.
