Once upon a Pumpkin Spice Latte

Once upon a Pumpkin Spice Latte

Long ago in a far away land called Seattle, a magical group of people gathered in Starbucks’ Liquid Lab in the spring of 2003 to create a companion drink to be paired with the Eggnog Latte and the Peppermint Mocha. Hoping for some inspiration the group snacked on some pumpkin pie and boy oh boy were they inspired!

For three months a special task force tried recipe after recipe, hoping to find the perfect combination of pumpkin and coffee- and one day they finally did. The Pumpkin Spice Latte (now nicknamed PSL) was born. It was created with rich flavors of nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, espresso and (obviously) pumpkin spice.

In 2003, the drink was tested in one-hundred lucky stores in Vancouver and Washington D.C. Within days the company knew a majestic fall tradition had been created. In the past decade alone 200 million lattes have been sipped and savored worldwide.

The original recipe hasn’t been touched since Starbucks created the first one eleven years ago, proof of just how good it is.The only thing that could’ve been different was it’s name. One of the original ideas for PSL’s name was Fall Harvest Latte.

And don’t fret if you’re going to be out of the country during PSL’s seasonal reign. The beverage is available in fifty countries across the Americas, Middle East, Europe, and Africa. Starbucks has your back, bro!

Sadly the trendy drink isn’t going to be around for much longer so grab your yoga pants, boots and get your iPhone ready to tweet about your #PSL! There’s even a frappuccino version of it for anyone who prefers blended beverages. It just couldn’t be autumn without chugging — in a lady-like fashion — at least one latte.
