Netflix Series to Watch Right Now

Sommer Sanouri, Staff Writer

After a month of what has to be one of the craziest emotional roller coasters most of us have experienced, it’d do all of us some good to sit back and relax. It seems sometimes that Netflix is like a fully-stocked pantry with nothing you actually want to eat. That being said, we’ve decided to take the liberty of raiding and rating the best of what Netflix has got to offer.

  • Stranger Things: We didn’t have to do much digging around to find out that this is definitely a show people are talking about. This science-fiction/horror web series set in Hawkins, Ind. opens with young Will Beyer, mysteriously vanishing without a trace. The show then follows the story of his distraught mother and her struggle to find her son and the journey of Will’s friends Dustin, Mike and Lucas. They befriend a psychokinetic girl claiming she knows Will’s whereabouts. Through their journey to find Will, his friends discover they’re dealing with something much larger than all of them and end up having to face other-worldly forces. With a tone and atmosphere similar to E.T. and The Goonies, this show is a great watch for mystery and sci-fiction lovers. Stranger Things has just finished up it’s first season and has been renewed for a second season, which should be coming out in 2017.
  • Daredevil: Based off a Marvel comic character and set in the Marvel Universe, this is surely a series for superhero fans. Daredevil follows the story of Matt Murdock, lawyer-by-day and vigilante by night, who uses his now ultra-heightened senses he’s developed from being blinded as a young boy to fight crime on the streets of New York City. While trying to keep away crime both in court and in the alleys of NYC, we watch Murdock struggle to live a double-life. If you like action and superhuman-like abilities, you’re going to want to check out this show. Daredevil has finished it’s second season and was renewed for a third.
  • Orange Is the New Black: Making this list and not adding this show seems like I’d just be asking for a riot, so here it is. If you haven’t yet heard of this show you’ve probably been living under a rock or possibly under heaps of homework, but don’t worry. We’re here to tell you exactly what you’ve been missing out on. Orange Is the New Black revolves around Piper Chapman, a 30-something year-old woman who’s got what seems to be a perfect job, house, and fiancé. Her life seems to going just as planned until one day all of that comes to a screeching halt when she’s arrested and sentenced to jail for eighteen months for a drug-smuggling incident she was part of years before. As Piper watches her whole life come crashing down around her, we watch her struggle to adjust to her new, not-so-fabulous life. A show full of comedy, and drama, Orange Is the New Black is one of the highest rated Netflix series. Just finishing its fourth season, the show was renewed for it’s fifth, sixth, and seventh season.
  • House of Cards: House of Cards tells the story of Francis “Frank” Underwood, a merciless and power-hungry congressman as he does what he needs to make his place as Secretary of State certain. However, when he finds that he won’t be given the title of which he was so certain, he and his equally devious wife target their new-found enemies and enact their revenge. A show filled with action, drama and the foul-play that is known as politics, House of Cards is definitely a series you won’t be able to stop watching once you’ve started. Having just finished their fourth season, House of Cards will be renewed for a fifth in 2017.
  • The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: A series created by the same producers and writers of 30 Rock, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt revolves around Kimmy Schmidt, Kimmy was kidnapped at 8-years-old, along with three other girls who were told that the apocalypse had come, and they were the only survivors. After 15 years of living in their kidnapper’s underground bunker, they’re finally rescued. The story follows Kimmy, now a 20-something woman, as she tries to learn to live a normal life and forget her past. A charming, quirky comedy with both a hilarious cast and writers, The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is now in its second season and is certainly worthy of a binge.
