Parents and Privacy on Facebook

In my opinion, Facebook is making a comeback. It’s been full cycle. It started as an alternative to MySpace, then parents got a hold of the trend and crowded our feeds, and now it’s back to us (still littered with parents, though. Pew Research Center and the University of Michigan conducted a study that showed 74% of parents who are Internet users use Facebook). I’ve noticed people posting more, but in a different manner. Before it was text posts, and now it’s photo albums similar to Instagram without the confines of only posting one picture.

So as I’m scrolling my newly frequented newsfeed when I saw a text post posted by multiple people.

It starts with “Better safe than sorry is right. Channel 11 News was just talking about this change in Facebook’s privacy policy”. The post continues on with some legal jargon to sound more official. It also warns that if you don’t repost the message, Facebook will use your photos and all your information (even the deleted content!)

Facebookers frantically began copying and pasting to avoid invasions of privacy. This warning seems to play perfectly into rising fears of Big Brother’s meddling eyes through technology.

Except it’s a rumor.

Facebook comments while “there may be water on Mars, don’t believe everything you read on the Internet today. Facebook is free and it always will be, and the thing about copying and pasting a legal notice is just a hoax.”
