Muslim Student Association (MSA), is one of the newest and fastest growing clubs at MHS. The club was started last year by a passionate student. Almost a year later, it has accumulated approximately thirty kids. So why exactly was this club started? To find the answer to this question and more, we interviewed Zainab Abdi, ‘18, the founder of MSA. According to Abdi, she wanted Muslim and non-Muslim students alike to a have a space to openly discuss issues going on at MHS and around the world.

The president of the University of Virginia received heavy backlash following a school-wide email she sent out in late fall last year. The source of the rage is President Teresa Sullivan’s choice to include a quote by the school’s founder, Thomas Jefferson. Students and staff alike appealed to the school’s president to cease quoting the school’s founder in future communication documents. They reasoned that regardless of the subject Jefferson was referring to in the quote, he should not have been referenced due to his history of slave ownership.

Weeks before Halloween, department stores were lined with an assortment of costumes and bags of candy featuring the signature purple and orange. It’s true that this holiday largely survives on stores’ agendas who are trying to rake in candy revenue. But after interviewing peers at MHS and a Halloween enthusiast, I found a bigger reason for Halloween to be in the hearts of young and old alike: it brings people together.
