One of the most popular movies of the year is Netflix’s K-Pop Demon Hunters, an animated movie that emphasizes the importance of embracing what makes you unique, and celebrating your differences. The way this message is portrayed, however, is particularly interesting. As the title suggests, the main characters are part of a K-Pop group known as ‘Huntrix’ that secretly hunts demons to protect their fans. The antagonists are a group known as the ‘Saja Boys’—demons disguised as human K-Pop idols—attempting to steal the souls of their fanbase.
The sheer popularity of this movie is record-breaking. According to ABC News, K-Pop Demon Hunters is now the most popular Netflix movie of all time, with well over 200 million views. ABC News also states that ‘Golden’—Huntrix’s hit song in the film’s universe—is the first song from an animated movie soundtrack to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Not only is the music catchy and the message compelling, but, according to Vicki Wyatt, ‘26, It is “visually different from most modern animation,” which sets it apart from its contemporaries. The film creates distinct character styles by experimenting with frame-rate variation, and combining inspiration from 2D anime and cartoons with its 3D animation style.
Despite it being a movie for young kids, K-Pop Demon Hunters has truly resonated with all age ranges, including many Minnetonka High School students. Simon Beyersdorf, ‘27, said, “I recommend it because I really enjoyed it and want to talk about it with other people.”
This weekend, consider immersing yourself in the multicolored, innovative world of “K-Pop Demon Hunters.” Even if K-Pop isn’t your jam, it is certainly worth a watch.
