The first movie is Hereditary (2018): a horror psychological thriller about a grieving family haunted by disturbing occurrences. For those who do not like horror movies, stay away from this one, but with an IMDb rating of 7.3, it is a must-watch for horror and thriller enthusiasts.

The Shining (1980) is another psychological thriller about a sinister family with violent and horrific visions. The Shining is scary and boasts an 8.4 IMDb rating, shining out as a classic Halloween horror film.

Poltergeist (1982) is about a family home haunted by demonic ghosts. With another IMDb rating of 7.3, students are sure to love this one. Poltergeist was released by Steven Spielberg and later became a franchise favorite. Reviews say it’s “one of the best horror/thrillers of the decade” and that “Poltergeist works as both a horror and a thriller.”

A Quiet Place (2018) is a post-apocalyptic horror movie where a family is forced to live in silence, attempting to hide from monsters with very sensitive hearing. One review mentions that “A Quiet Place starts with racking up the tension” that continues to build for the film’s full duration. With a similar IMDb rating of 7.5, A Quiet Place is a hair-raising movie to watch.

Halloween (1978) is another thriller about a murderer who killed his sister, escaping from a mental hospital and going to a small town to kill again. A featured review says that it was “the most influential of all slasher films.” Similar to A Quiet Place, the use of tension in Halloween is a significant part of the movie that elevates it to a new level. With an IMDb rating of 7.7, this murder film is a must-watch, not only for thriller enthusiasts but also for casual moviegoers as well.
