Girl Pockets: Another “Feminist” complaint?

Girl Pockets: Another Feminist complaint?

Anna Weber, Feature Editor

I’m a girl. Though my short hair cut, elementary school pictures, basketball shorts phase, and clay-crusted fingernails may make you think differently, I identify as a female in our society. Like many other females, and the occasional fantastic male or transgender, I buy leggings, skinny jeans, dresses, and skirts. How many pockets are found in these products? Zero.

It’s not as if I must carry all of the belongings that I have accumulated over the course of my life with me in my pockets. I usually only want to bring around the essentials for life: keys, a small amount of cash, my cell phone, and maybe some chap stick. Yet, looking at the skinny jeans that are tightly stretched around my thighs at the moment, I find I cannot fit a single item in the thin “pocket” of my jeans. Nor can I stash these few items in that little black dress or those perfectly comfortable leggings. This fuels a woman’s need for a purse, lest she dare wear sweatpants or cargo pants with actual pockets (hats off to those women). The remaining women must continue to carry purses, continue to be what feminine-looking, dainty, skinny girls must always be—or the ones our society calls “attractive.”

Perhaps you think that I’m just another feminist, arguing for another oppressed majority goal. If so, I implore you to take a quick Google search of One Direction. Besides just being some men whom you may find attractive, let’s notice their pants. Skinny jeans or skinny jeans? You do not have to wear dresses, leggings, or skirts to experience my problem. We are becoming a pocket-less society, regardless of gender. It’s up to you to decide if you’ll sacrifice for fashion, succumb to our thousand of purse and bag options in return for a pair of pants that make your behind look fine, but the question remains: should people have to make that sacrifice? Do we have to decide between fashion and utility? It’s completely your choice, but I’ll be in my overalls with full pockets if you decide to join the dark side with me.
