October Pink

October Pink

Professional football has advocated for many charitable causes. Campaigns like NFL Play 60 use the support of celebrity athletes to promote their programs. October is known for Breast Cancer Awareness, and during this month, the NFL partners with the American Cancer Society to raise money for cancer research, in addition to raising popular awareness about the common disease. Many players wear pink shoes, arm bands, and gloves. In this instance, NFL players use their position as professional athletes to advocate for an important issue.

It is estimated that one in eight women will get breast cancer at some point in their lives. It is the most common cancer in women, and can affect men. Each year breast cancer affects more than 200,000 women in the United States.

Throughout the month of October, student government has promoted the collection of pink yogurt lids. General Mills, the maker of Yoplait yogurt, has decided to donate 10¢ to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation for every lid mailed back to the company or redeemed online, with a maximum donation of 1.5 million dollars. Both the NFL and Minnetonka do their part to support those impacted by breast cancer.

Minnetonka football and student government worked together this year in preparation for our pink-out on October 25th. Student government sold pink t-shirts to be worn to the football game at Edina, to raise awareness for breast cancer. The Skippers won 21-16.
