Artist of the Month

Artist of the Month: Will Schmid

Grade: 11

For how long have you pursued music?

I have played guitar for 4 years and the trombone for 6 years. I prefer the guitar to the trombone.

Who are your musical inspirations?

Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. They are all jazz guitarists.

What bands are you in?

I am in a jazz band, a trio with Eric Van Camp (drums) and Tyler Wagner (bass), and a jazz quartet with Eric Van Camp (drums), Derek Hartman (piano) and Tyler Wagner (bass). We frequently book gigs around town and play for money.

What is your favorite part about playing music?

I love jazz music. The sense of wordless communication that our band has when we play is incomparable to anything else. Playing with people who share a similar interest and grasp a familiar concept is awesome. We all push each other to play better.

Do you hope to pursue music in the future?

Although it wouldn’t be practical to fully involve myself in music as a career, I will never stop playing. I possibly would like to double major or minor in music, pairing it with a form of science.

What are some of your notable musical accomplishments?

I am the only guitar player in the state to make the MMEA all-state jazz ensemble. I have also played in the school jazz ensemble for 3 years. I play the trombone in the wind ensemble. Additionally, I am in the MHS marching band, pep band, and pit orchestra. I am also a member of the Coffeehouse board.
