Parking, the bane of Minnetonka

The MHS parking lot is special for the sole reason that it serves as a rite of passage for MHS students. For the small fee of $300, you too can sprint from your sixth hour seat, past the cafeteria, and into the void that is the West Entrance all the while frantically trying to find your parking pass partner so you can be the first out of the lot. Yet, despite your valiant efforts, you don’t end up really leaving until 3:00 pm. We value traditions at MHS, and this is one that has carried on whether we try to or not. Each year as students work their way up the seniority ladder, their experiences in the lot and regarding parking as a whole improve or get more frustrating, little by little.

The struggle begins sophomore year when students aren’t eligible to buy a parking pass and must park on the infamous Frontage: a shameful quarter-mile walk that isn’t ideal and definitely not appreciated in the heart of winter with the negative thirty-degree windchill and multiple feet of snow. The struggle then continues into junior year, where one must find a partner that they can drive with everyday. In the past this wasn’t a huge issue, but now with Vantage, many people’s ideal partners aren’t at school for half of the day.

As for seniors, many are stressed from college applications and other things that happen on a daily basis, so the parking lot also serves as a nice place to vent their anger at their fellow classmates. From 2:40 pm to 3:00 pm, the parking lot is a battleground that separates the strong from the weak, and the novice from the jaded, which is probably the reason why seniors seem so aggressive. Essentially, navigating the parking comes with experience. But the parking lot isn’t changing anytime soon, so for now all we can do is wait it out until
