Timothée Chalamet is no stranger to the spotlight. He’s credited for 42 acting roles on IMDb, an exceedingly impressive résumé for a young 30-year-old. Chalamet has several smash hits under his belt, including Dune: Part Two, Lady Bird, A Complete Unknown, and the new Marty Supreme. It’s obvious to many that he’s rapidly headed towards the pinnacle of stardom, but the question remains: can he truly establish his name among the legends of cinema?

Chalamet has gone on record unabashedly stating that he is “really in pursuit of greatness,” and that he “[wants] to be one of the greats.” His role in Marty Supreme is certainly a step in the right direction, earning him widespread critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination. The film follows Chalamet as Marty Mauser, a table tennis professional in the 1950s who robs and schemes his way through life. When Mauser discovers that the world championships will be taking place in Tokyo, he scrambles to find any method he can use to catch a flight to Japan. Chalamet’s interpretation of a desperate con-man is truly top-notch, cementing Marty Supreme as another standout in his repertoire.
However, it may not be enough to win him his first Oscar.
The Oscars are notorious for strict awards criteria, especially towards young men such as Chalamet. The odds are stacked against him, especially with such powerful and experienced rivals as Leonardo DiCaprio and Michael B. Jordan. If Chalamet does overcome these adversities and win the Oscar, it would certainly bump up his status as an actor. After winning an Oscar, the only more prestigious direction for an actor to go is winning more Oscars. The tides are potentially turning in his favor, however, as The Academy is shifting its target audience towards young men. This process includes acts such as proposing a Best Popular Film category and eventually switching broadcasting to YouTube. Crowning a young man as the victor of the event would be the cherry on top to their newly evolving format.
Whether or not Chalamet wins an Oscar anytime soon, he’s still well on his way up. Dune: Part Three is scheduled to release in 2026, with Chalamet reprising his role as the lead. His status as a household name is quickly being cemented, due in most part to his highly varied backlog of movies and immense skillset as an actor. Whether Wonka or Bones and All is more your speed, Chalamet is sure to please any moviegoer as he continues to work his way towards his zenith.
