It’s CHRISTMAS! Well, not for a few weeks, technically, but that certainly does not deter the student body from celebrating in full force. But when can you start listening to Christmas music? Whether you’re a “set up the lights right after Halloween”-type person or ban any Christmas cheer until after Thanksgiving, this question seems to be the least agreed-upon in terms of what people deem “appropriate.”
Owen Beckers, ‘27, says with conviction that “right after Halloween, it is Christmas.” Marli Soberski, ‘26, believes “the expectation is that you make a playlist and start jamming at 11:59 p.m. sharp on October 31.” These students seem to agree that the spooky season deserves respect, no holiday tunes until December 1.
However, not every fan is an exclusive November and December listener. Ella Schumacher, ‘26, has a hot take that the earliest you can
start listening is August 25. Similarly, Schumacher confirms that she listens to Christmas music in the summer. Based on this small sample size, its probable that most students prefer to listen to Christmas music through November and December.
At the end of the day, who are we to say when you can or can’t celebrate your holiday cheer? There is no end-all, be-all to what day you should kick-off the holidays with some Christmas spirit, because who’s stopping you? Whether you listen no earlier than Thanksgiving, right after Halloween, or even in the summer, it’s never too late to celebrate. Crack open the eggnog, snuggle up by the fire, and turn on that nostalgic holiday music that everyone knows and loves
